It’s Me - Kahi
I actually found “It’s Me” by Kahi on accident. I was looking for YouTube singers' music, mostly for Dumbfoundead. Then, I came across the song. I thought it was really cool that he was featured in a Korean song and that he was rapping for a country that is a part of his culture.
I fell in love with the song from the moment that I watched the music video. I think I’ve listened to the song over a million times to infinity and beyond.
The choreography is really AMAZING. I wish I was a dancer cuz if I were, this would be the choreo I dance every single day. I remember reading that it was supposed to sort of manly dance that is also feminine at the same time. This made me like it even more because I, myself, am not the most girly girl. It was something I could relate to. But whatever the meaning behind the choreography and the lyrics, it was really cool.
I absolutely adore this song. It felt so empowered when I was listening to the beat. The snaps make “It’s Me” sound so sophisticated too. I felt like a strong woman when I was listening to it especially when I was listening to the English parts. I’m so bad girl. I’m so cool girl. I’m so sexy sexy sexy girl.
At first, I thought “It’s Me” was about a girl just making her way and doing her own thing. When Dumbfounded raps, it sounded like girl in the song is saying, “Oh, you don’t like me? You want that other girl? Well, bye~ I don’t need you.”
But, I was totally wrong since I don’t understand a bit of Korean. My interpretation of the song after reading the translation is about a girl basically telling off a guy for making assumptions on the type of person she is. He probably can’t handle her. The girl is embracing who she is and wants (cuz she doesn’t need a man) a man who is on her level.
“It’s Me” has to be my number one favorite K-POP song. It has a mix of Korean culture with Korean-American culture. I am a huge fan of globalization and blending heritage with the modern day, so I’m happy Dumbfounded is featured in this song. I also like that the composer of the song was a woman (Rottyful Sky)! I am always ecstatic when there are women in any field. Kahi showcases a song that makes a woman feel strong and comfortable in her skin. I really appreciate that as well.
Please check out the song and read the translation, then let us know your interpretation or what you thought of the song.
